Band Director


Kenneth P. Smith is in his 13th year of teaching and 2015-2016 marks his third year at Indian River High School. A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Mr. Smith graduated from Tallwood High School and served in the U.S. Army. Upon completion he attended Norfolk State University where he earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education, graduating Cum Laude.

Upon graduation from NSU, Mr. Smith accepted the Band Director position at Surry High School and Luther Porter Middle School in Surry County. After successful years at Surry High, Mr. Smith accepted the Orchestra Director position at Greenbrier Middle School. Orchestras under his direction have earned numerous superior and excellent ratings. Mr. Smith served as a mentor, football head coach, track coach, and step coach at Greenbrier. Bands under Mr. Smith’s direction at Indian River High have earned superior and excellent ratings in the marching, concert, and jazz band venue.

Mr. Smith holds membership in the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association and Virginia Music Educators Association. He currently serves in the 380th Army Reserve Band in Richmond, VA as the popular band leader and Drum Major. Mr. Smith also serves as the Musical Director at Deliverance Tabernacle Church in Chesapeake, VA.

Mr. Smith and his wife Shenelle are proud Norfolk citizens and reside in South Norfolk. They have three handsome sons, Caleb, Joshua, and Isaiah. In his free time, Mr. Smith enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
